All along the eastern edge of Yorkshire is a glorious coastline spanning approximately 100 miles. From the southern Spurn Point to Redcar in the north, there are several stunning spots to stop at, see, and stay. We took a tour of the coastal towns and seaside resorts to discover the beautiful nature and brilliant businesses creating unique experiences all along the Yorkshire Riviera.
Bridlington, Flamborough Head, and Bempton Cliffs
Moving on up from the attractive East Riding resorts of Withernsea and Hornsea, we land in the archetypal East Coast town of Bridlington. This famous old resort has traditionally been a popular getaway for family fun and later life relaxation, with the extensive, sandy South Beach overlooking Bridlington Bay, offering beautiful views of the harbour. Attractions here include Bridlington Spa, which hosts several shows and events, and Bridlington Old Town, where historic buildings have been revived by some fine new independents.
Just a few miles from Brid, to the eastern point of the Yorkshire Coast, is a wondrous piece of nature.
Flamborough Head is a remarkable promontory which has been designated a Special Area of Conservation. The picturesque white cliffs are topped by two standing lighthouse towers, dating back centuries, with beautiful bays beneath. For a magical experience nearby, Bempton Cliffs are a must-visit; a magnificent nature reserve where hundreds of thousands of seabirds settle in the crags during Spring and Summer. Enjoy a spectacular clifftop walk whilst taking in the joyous spectacle of puffins and other wonderful wildlife.

Filey, Cayton Bay, and Scarborough
Filey is a local seaside town that grew from a small fishing village into a popular tourist resort in between Bridlington and Scarborough. Filey offers a more serene environment without losing any seaside amenities; indeed, everyone’s favourite seaside staple, fish and chips, is served traditionally and deliciously at timeless delights Dickie Bees and CJ’s. Along the road, Maynards will provide your dessert with a great selection of old-skool sweets. And during the day, Filey’s long stretch of golden sand provides one of the best beaches on the Yorkshire Coast.
An equally impressive beach is found a little further up the coast at Cayton Bay. Here, the wide sweeping bay is complemented by a clear and waving North Sea, attracting surfers all year round for its consistent conditions. Whether you’re here for the surf or the sun, there’s the chance to relax at beachfront cafe Salty Dog, take in some culture at Scarborough Fair Collection and Museum, and treat yourself to an elegant meal and maybe even a luxurious stay at The Farrier.
Next, we arrive at perhaps Yorkshire’s most famous coastal town: Scarborough’s iconic seafront conjures visions of a romantic past, and behind the sweeping bays and grand hotels, its present remains full of life. In amongst the vibrant south bay amusements are the fabulous fish shop Lifeboat and seafood supremo Lookout on the Pier. Up on the scenic north bay, you can visit the tranquil Peasholm Park and see live music at Scarborough Open Air Theatre. And back in the centre, drink great coffee at Koda, sup craft beer at Craft, and watch the best Yorkshire culture at St Joseph’s Theatre.
Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby, and Sandsend
The north east coast reveals a trio of delightful Yorkshire towns. Robin Hood’s Bay, nestled between Scarborough and Whitby, is a picture-postcard gem. Winding down to the bay and through cobbled streets passes cute cafes, small shops and cosy pubs, including Tea, Toast and Post, Berties of Bay, and Smugglers Ale House respectively. No trip to this fishing village is complete without a walk on the idyllic beach, where you can discover fossils and explore rock pools.
On to many people’s favourite piece of the Yorkshire Coast: Whitby. This unique and evocative town is filled with historic charm and modern delights. The distinctive skyline looks out to Whitby Abbey, a 7th-century Christian monastery which influenced Bram Stoker’s Dracula – it’s no wonder Whitby is home to the world’s largest Goth Weekend. To get here, climb the 199 steps and reward yourself with a clifftop beer at Whitby Brewery. Elsewhere, food is plentiful; there’s breakfast at The Singing Kettle and lunch at Angel Fisheries or dinner at The Magpie. And it’d be rude to leave without Whitby Jet, the local gemstone found in many independent jewellery shops here.
There are even more beauty spots to continue on to; from the pretty village of Sandsend, where Fish Cottage serves delicious seafood and Saltmoore provides a gorgeous wellness spa hotel; to the sandy shoreline of Runswick Bay, the charming fishing village of Staithes, and the surf and sun of Saltburn-by-the-sea. And that’s exactly where to enjoy your Summer: by the sea, all along the Yorkshire Riviera.
