York Minster will light up with colour this Winter in a stunning visual display. This cultural arts project by York BID encourages thousands of people into the city to experience an inclusive event which celebrates York’s heritage and creativity.

Colour & Light began in 2023 when it transformed York Minster and returned in 2024 to showcase York Art Gallery. In 2025 the Minster’s iconic South Transept will be illuminated by a spectacular display of flora and fauna, telling special stories on a ten minute loop about York’s diverse and beautiful wildlife; from the peregrine falcons that call the Minster home and the foxes that roam the city after dark, to the horses that the Roman’s rode into Eboracum on, and the legendary dragons carved into York’s history, it promises to be a dazzling and fascinating sight.

As well as putting on a creative show harmonious with the city’s UNESCO Media Arts status, one of the main aims of Colour & Light is to give people a unique reason to visit York’s centre. It’s funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with cash allocated by City of York Council. The fund highlights the importance of investing in cultural initiatives to support local economies and enhance community well-being. Partners York BID, Double Take Projections and York Minster emphasised the positive impact such an event can have on a city.

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID: “Colour & Light is fast becoming a highlight of York’s cultural calendar. By encouraging families and visitors to explore the city centre during these quieter months, we’re not only creating magical experiences but also supporting local businesses and reinforcing York’s vibrant evening economy.”

Lisa Power, York Minster’s Head of Events and Participation: “Colour & Light welcomes tens of thousands of people during what is often the coldest, darkest and quietest time of the year. We hope that this beautiful display will once again remind everyone that York is open all year round!”
