With its iconic minster, medieval walls and characterful cobbled Shambles, York is steeped in history, however, it also boasts an outstanding selection of independent restaurants, cool shops and one-of-a-kind attractions to discover and enjoy. Here are some hidden gems and local favourites to help you make the most of a day spent in this thriving city.

There’s no better place to start your morning than at Bar Hashery. For those who just can’t wait for a breakfast pastry and cup of coffee, this popular brunch spot now has a kiosk on platform 10/11 at the railway station. Alternatively, you can head to their café on Bootham for something more substantial. Bar Hashery is known for its savoury waffles, which come with a variety of different toppings such as poached egg, smoked salmon, avocado and hollandaise, or mozzarella, cheddar and ham. These can all be enjoyed with a nutritious glass of freshly made juice, coffee or even cocktails, along with cakes from the café’s own bakery.

Next, why not treat yourself to a little retail therapy? York has all of the big brands you’d expect to find in a city of its size but its independents are the real stars.

If you dig sustainable style, The Vintage Works on Grape Lane sells a curated range of premium vintage clothing that includes some real treasures. You’ll find preloved denim, sportswear and footwear here, with pieces by coveted brands such as Ralph Lauren, Adidas, Harley Davidson, Carhartt and Nike. There’s something to suit all budgets and the shop’s staff can even post your purchase to your home free of charge so that you don’t have to tote it around all day.

Another charming shop is The Cat Gallery. Tucked away on Low Petergate, this was founded by a couple of cat lovers in 2001 and visiting it is a must for fans of felines. Among its huge range of cat-themed gifts, you’ll find cards, art prints, ornaments, jewellery and bags, including trendy acrylic necklaces and the ‘cat of the year’ from York’s Lucky Cat Shop. Naturally, you can also pick up toys and treats for the kitties in your life here, from cat nip bubbles and yarn balls to cute collars and harnesses.

If you’re seeking an activity that will be fun for the whole family, The Hole in Wand on Coppergate should be your next stop. York has long attracted fans of magic and folklore and the Potions Cauldron Group have been celebrating this since 2018 with attractions like The Hole In Wand – a wizarding-themed mini golf course. Enter a world with bubbling cauldrons, dragon’s eggs and a cheeky gargoyle, and enjoy nine holes of golf. Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll then be rewarded with a free gift to take home and can relax in the Wizard Tavern with potions to drink and magical treats to eat.

Finally, why not end your day the Italian way with drinks and charcuterie at La Bottega Milanese? The Leeds-born bar and speciality coffee shop came to York last year and its sophisticated spot on New Street is perfect for people watching. Now that the summer’s here you can sit outside, soaking up the European city vibes as you sip a negroni or glass of wine. You can then tuck into a delicious grazing platter of cured meats and cheeses, which are accompanied by olives and fluffy focaccia. Make sure you save room for some tiramisu, too.
