The restaurants of York have elevated to excellence in the last few years thanks to the opening of some amazing new places alongside the few existing fine dining options. We sample six exceptional experiences dining out in York.

Bosun’s

One of the newest arrivals to York’s quality dining scene is also one of the best and most unique. Opened at the end of 2021 and situated at the distinctive Boatyard building in Bishopthorpe, the immediate attraction of Bosun’s is its special setting. Raised above the River Ouse, their relaxed outdoor terrace provides a stunning spot to take in the idyllic views of York. Inside is equally elegant, a handsome dining room expertly designed with pretty greenery and social seating. Happily, the food at Bosun’s rises up to the surroundings; this is high quality classic cooking using great local produce which everyone can enjoy. Bosun’s burgers and steaks are triumphantly satisfying, and it’s the perfect place for a cracking Sunday roast. Foodies can delight in truffle oil on wild mushrooms, beetroot gels and more, whilst we all can indulge in their glorious desserts and dreamy drinks. For couples, friends and families, daytime and night, Bosun’s is a delicious dining destination.

Forage

Forage is a hidden gem in York city centre; entering into this secret space reveals a piece of urban nature to immerse in. Once settled into the swish setting, you can ease into some fabulous food from a menu that focuses on seasonal produce and small plates – and the cocktails are equally amazing too. As the name implies, Forage showcases the best natural nearby ingredients and elevates them into delectable dishes.

Legacy at The Grand

As one of York’s finest hotels, it is unsurprising to discover that The Grand has a fabulous fine dining restaurant within. Legacy at The Grand serves a modern British and Yorkshire-inspired tasting menu with a focus on locality, sustainability and seasonality. These are classic flavours – from Whitby crab to Yorkshire lamb – with masterful twists from a talented head chef. A beautiful vegetarian tasting menu makes Legacy suitable for everyone, and the impressive setting and service of The Grand make it a real treat.

Skosh

When Skosh opened in 2016 it grabbed the attention of the nation’s foodies who soon realised that York was serious about dining out. This lovely restaurant creates inventive plates of food which are beautiful to look at and even better to taste. Combining Asian influences with the best local produce, Skosh deliver dishes that are dazzlingly different and always focus on the finest flavour – it’s refined eating in a relaxed atmosphere and it’s something special.
