Transforming humble, locally-sourced ingredients into unfussy food that’s brimming with flavour: that’s what Portuguese cuisine is all about and you can try it for yourself this autumn at Tasca Frango.

This convivial York eaterie combines rustic Portuguese charm with a modern dining experience. Like the tascas of Portugal, Tasca Frango is owned and run by family in the form of husband-and-wife team Ted and Emma Hustler, who opened their first piri piri chicken stall, Frango Eduardo, at SPARK* in 2021. Since then, they’ve been busy with residencies at Thor’s Tipi and other venues across Yorkshire, plus their new cafe/wine bar, Cavo, at The Cocoa Works.

Located at 28 Colliergate, Tasca Frango has a warm and inviting interior that’s decorated with the rich colours of the Iberian Peninsula. It serves authentic Portuguese tapas – or petiscos – that are intended to be shared, making it just the place to enjoy a cosy dinner out with friends.

You can start your meal here with nibbles like plump and juicy Gordal olives or grilled sourdough from nearby bakery Little Arras. These can be followed by a selection of small plates that includes options such as Frango’s signature goan curried chicken, flamegrilled picante chorizo, Portuguese piri piri prawns or spiced hispi cabbage. You can also add tempting extras like dips, thin and crispy fries or spicy rice, while for dessert you can tuck into iconic Pastel de Nata or Basque pistachio cheesecake

Among the restaurant’s drinks offering are wines, ports and Portuguese-inspired cocktails like its own Tasca Negroni or the Amaretto and Ginja Sour, which is made using Portuguese cherry liqueur.

If you’re planning a midday catch up, or would like to escape the office to enjoy something more inspiring than a sandwich, Tasca Frango currently offers a weekday lunch deal that allows you to pick three tapas dishes for £20 when dining before 5pm from Wednesday to Friday.
