March 30th – remember the date – is Mother’s Day. In York we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to one of the loveliest ways to show your appreciation: tea with Mother. With its rich heritage and warm hospitality, Yorkshire is filled with some of the finest tearooms that are perfect for a Mother’s Day treat. Here are five favourites in and around York:

Bettys Tea Rooms
The famous Bettys Tea Rooms attracts visitors from far and wide to experience its traditional charm and comforting elegance. Lucky for York, the delights of Bettys can be enjoyed without having to travel far or wide, as their five tearooms all in Yorkshire include the original in nearby Harrogate and one on St. Helen’s Square in York’s centre. These beautiful old buildings are ideal settings for Bettys iconic Afternoon Tea, where you’ll enjoy a selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes – plus of course a perfect pot of tea. And maybe, for Mother’s Day, treat yourselves to a glass of fizz.

The Grand
For an elegant Afternoon Tea, there’s nowhere quite like The Grand. Indulge in an elaborate tower of showstopping savoury and special treats from masterful Head Pastry Chef Devin Jones. Embracing tradition and adding a contemporary twist, the menu changes with the seasons to serve delicate finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones and picture-perfect patisseries. Accompanied by a soothing pot of tea or a sparkling glass of champagne, and with stunning view over York city walls, this is memorable Mother’s Day experience.

Florian Poirot
Florian Poirot is a multiple award winning Pastry Chef who brought his exceptional talents from France to Yorkshire. Having treated ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ Malton to his beautiful creations, last year Florian added to his shop there with a new patisserie and cafe on York’s Shambles. This is an impressive location for tea with Mother, complete with macarons, chocolates and cakes, all made from the finest ingredients that bring a flavour of France to York.

Crumbs Cupcakery
You’ll not find a better spot to take in the majesty of York than this College Street cupcakery facing York Minster. Crumbs is a lovely little shop with a big view and cupcakes to match. Baked fresh every day by twins Charlotte and Jennifer, there’s an array of fabulous flavours for a Mother’s Day delight. And of course it’d be rude not to accompany your cupcakes with a perfect pot of tea.

Kawa House
Kawa House pride themselves on excellent coffee – indeed, Kawa is the Polish word for coffee! Of course, they do a damn good tea too, and a food menu of quality cakes, lunches and brunches, sourced locally, made seasonally and served tastily. Come here for a relaxed yet refined Mother’s Day treat.
