Tucked away in Franklins Yard off Fossgate, Mexican restaurant Batanga is certainly one of the city’s lesser-known treasures. This independent eatery serves dishes that burst with flavour, and a colourful interior and friendly service contribute to its cosy and convivial atmosphere, recreating an authentic taste of Mexican culture and cuisine in the heart of York.

Batanga was born in 2023 after its owners, Cat Foalks and Kacper Kaczorowski, shared a non-traditional Mexican feast with friends in place of Christmas dinner and decided that this should be the theme for their new restaurant. They knew from the outset that they wanted to do away with formalities and offer something that would ‘mix pub service with a traditional restaurant atmosphere’. This has worked well and Batanga’s intimate size means that they are able to get to know their customers. They also don’t overcharge and their discounts for York residents have helped them to gain a loyal local following.

On the Batanga’s food menu you’ll find a selection of tasty tacos and quesadillas, which can be bought individually or as a pair or trio. You can also tuck into ‘big plates’ like the highly-recommended Lamb Birria stew. This originates from Jalisco, Mexico, and features slow-cooked lamb shoulder in a spicy chilli, tomato and cinnamon sauce. Another firm staff favourite is the Sandwich Tonto, a vegan burrito with cauliflower and walnut chilli, rice, guacamole, corn, jalapeños and lettuce. Whatever your choice of main, there’s also the perfect side to accompany it – you can take your pick from the likes of deep fried, stuffed ‘Jalapeño Poppers’, Loaded Fries or a Street Corn Dip and tortilla chips.

The restaurant takes its name from a Mexican cocktail that blends lime juice, tequila and cola. This is, of course, on its drinks list along with many other cocktails that vary in strength and price from lighter options like a Watermelon Mojito or fruity Bramble to the Aunt Roberta – a rather intoxicating mix of absinthe, vodka, gin, brandy and blackberry liqueur that is sold at a maximum of one per customer per visit.

Looking to the future, Batanga’s owners say that they hope the restaurant will be here for many years to come. Their customers often ask if the restaurant will grow, however, they currently quite like the fact it feels exclusive while remaining relaxed and low priced. If you’re planning a meal out in York soon, why not make this rising star your next dining destination?
