Bab Tooma
Indulge in authentic middle eastern flavours in the heart of York at the much-loved Syrian restaurant, Bab Tooma. As soon as you step through the door you’ll be met with the delicious aromas of food cooking, beautiful Arabian decor and a community where everyone from all backgrounds and cultures are welcomed. The main menu is full of a huge selection of fresh salads, cold mezze such as hummus or yalanji, hot mezze such as falafel or wings, grilled dishes and chef specials like gourmet chicken burgers and lamb shoulders that will fill you up and leave you satisfied. If you’re fancying something sweet after your meal you can enjoy tasty Arabic desserts like grande kunafa and baklawa slice. Prices range from £2 all the way up to over £70.
Drake’s Fisheries
Treat yourself to a British classic at one of York’s longest standing family owned and run fish and chip shops, Drake’s Fisheries. Found in the shadows of the Minster, you can pop in to enjoy some of their world-renowned traditional fish and chips. Menu items from the sea include flavoursome haddock, wholetail breaded Whitby scampi with their signature tartare sauce, plaice with the skin on depending on availability, homemade fish cakes, and a fish of the day subject to availability. Other fishy dishes include seafood salads, spicy fish tacos and a posh fish sandwich if you’re feeling fancy. If fish isn’t your thing, dishes ‘from the land’ are also available to enjoy. Bosun’s
Located along the beautiful River Ouse is a unique dining experience at Bosun’s. Here you can enjoy delicious dishes from their contemporary and innovative menu created using high quality locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients. On a Sunday you can enjoy one of the most comforting meals to end a week on, a roast. For £25 for two courses, or £29 for three courses, you can pick from delicious roast topside of beef, lion of pork, or honey roast ham that is served with duck fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables and gravy. End the delicious meal with something sweet with a selection of desserts including sticky toffee pudding, a dark chocolate sponge, lemon posset and strawberry and pimm’s Yorkshire mess.
Shambles Kitchen
Shambles Kitchen located in the iconic Shambles is home to York’s famous sandwiches named after York’s most infamous and famous characters. One of the sandwiches in the Harry Trotter, a pulled pork sandwich with zingy slaw, Shambles mayo, SK apple BBQ sauce served in focaccia. Or enjoy the explosive flavours of the Guy Fawkes beef barbacoa with blow-torched cheese, gherkins, Shambles mayo, sriracha and spicy Chipotle gunpowder, also served in focaccia. Wraps are also on the menu with a vegan shawarma with pickled cabbage, quick-pickled red onion, hummus, vegan aioli, baby plum tomatoes, spinach and lettuce or a chicken shawarma with the same tasty fillings and a non-vegan aioli. All wraps and sandwiches are only £10 or less!
The Blue Barbakan
Found along Fossgate is the exquisite Blue Barbakan where you can enjoy predominantly Polish cuisine with extra European twists. Stop by for a dinner full of comforting European meals with a huge selection to choose from. Start your dining experience off with some tasty pierogis topped with crispy bacon and sour cream, oscypek served with cranberry jam, fish cakes and much more. Follow that with a filling main such as delicious wiener schnitzel, bigos served in a bread bowl, rabbit leg wrapped with pancetta served with butternut squash, braised red cabbage and roast potatoes, and much more. End the night with a cup of perfectly roasted coffee or something sweet like their vanilla baked cheesecake or poppy seed cake.
The Whippet Inn
Hidden away on North Street in the heart of the city, is the beautiful Grade II building home to the Whippet Inn. Inside the exquisite exterior is a laid back, relaxing atmosphere where you can unwind whilst enjoying amazing comfort food. If you find yourself inside the Whippet Inn on a Sunday, enjoy their Get Roasted session where you can indulge in a traditional roast dinner created using the finest Yorkshire produce. Two courses to enjoy during one of their Get Roasted sessions costs only £21.50, and three courses for £26. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available meaning everyone can enjoy it!
