FOOD & DRINK
Established in 1992 by owners Andrea and Mandy Gaias, Little Italy has earned itself a favourable reputation in York after 27 years of endless dedication from the pair. In a city of numerous cheap and cheerful Italian restaurants, this quaint eatery is known in York for its attention to detail, and they pride themselves on making all pasta in-house, along with many of their deserts. With that being said, it would be rude not to give one of those fresh pasta dishes a try. So why not see just how well it scores in a well-loved cannelloni dish, or even push the boat out a little further and try what is arguably their most popular dish, misto di pesce, king prawns, queen scallops, mussels, tiger prawns, calamari, and langoustine cooked in white wine, garlic, and tomato and served on a bed of fresh spaghetti.

Another of Goodramgate’s family run businesses, Cleggs provides this street with all things design. Owners Mark Jones and his wife believe the store is a reflection of their own home in terms of the products they stock and the design of the shop itself, with inspiration from their travels around Europe and the far east as well as their shared love for period design. In Cleggs, you won’t struggle to find an eclectic range of homeware and gifts, vintage pieces, clothing and bags, and also prints and greetings cards. Travelling Man, which formerly began in Leeds, joined Goodramgate in 1997 when owner Nabil began to open more northern branches following the success of the Leeds store. Now, with stores also in Manchester and Newcastele, Travelling Man has been described as one of the leading games/comic shop. Before opening his flagship store in Leeds, Travelling Man had humble beginnings and was properly established in the 80’s by Nabil and his friend Simon, who both shared a passion for board games and comics. And it’s down to the pairs’ passion for their products which has driven the success of all of the stores across the north, as they regularly hold board game tournaments, comic signings and other events to ensure their own passion can be reciprocated amongst all of their customers.

Joining Goodramgate’s independent clan is Earworm Records run by friends Paul and Rich. Pepper (we can all dream) then fear not. Help is on hand from owners Paul and Rich who have a concrete knowledge of their stock, and are more than happy to help.

Owner Janine Roberts has always had a fascination with flowers, and even as a child she remembers being completely delighted by them. She continued to work with flowers throughout her life, and after earning an NVQ level 2 in floristry, Janine went on to work for a plant nursery on Goodramgate. After the shop closed, Janine took a leap of faith and opened her own florist ‘Ello Flower’ in a former antiques shop on Goodramgate. With the help of her family and friends, together they helped Janine transform her shop completely in such a short space of time the shop was soon entered into New Business of The Year category in the 2004 Evening Press Business Awards. It didn’t take long for Janine to make her mark as a florist in York with her exotic, tropical and bright displays. Ello Flower stocks a wide variety of fresh flowers, arrangements, and gifts to purchase; they specialise in providing wedding, funeral and other occasion flowers.
