We celebrate the past, present and future of innovation on the railways. We’re home to over 200 years of history and a million fascinating railway objects. Dedicated to igniting our visitors’ curiosity about the people, places and engineering marvels behind the railways, we put our passion for amazing stories into everything we do.

See the world-changing locomotive Rocket, the Japanese bullet train and Queen Victoria’s ‘palace on wheels’. Get up close to icons of the rails including Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive. Discover how high-speed rail travel began and journey back in time to experience the working life of a station. Explore over 200 years of history and find out how railways shaped our world.

We have been working hard to provide a safe, clean space for you to enjoy. To manage visitor numbers and ensure you have a relaxed visit we have introduced free, timed ticketing, guided routes around the museum, so please make sure you book online in advance.
