So here we are. In the magnificent city of York. If you don’t yet know who we are and why we are here, then please allow me to introduce ourselves…

Starting in 2014, Independent Life began as an idea to present the best independent happenings across a city. By showcasing goings on, large and small, we would support independent businesses and offer an informative and entertaining service to the people.

This would be done through a number of channels; our website, providing up to date news and listings; a quarterly magazine, exploring stories and inviting creatives to contribute; social media, sharing citywide on the point updates; and the Little Black Book, a printed guide to the city’s independents.

For the past few years, this has all been going on in Leeds, and now, it is time to bring it all to York!

York, theoretically, has a perfect set up for a thriving independent scene, with its unique character and vibrant streets, but inexplicably this has never previously taken off to the extent of its promise. Recently though, an array of exciting independents have arrived, and the city is organically building a strong and creative independent community, which we are here to champion.

Throughout, our content is driven by the people for the people, and so we invite you all to have your say. Yes, we will be continually delving ourselves into the lesser known, the popular favourites, and everything in between, to present all that interests an independent life. But we also want to know: what would you like to see here?

You can tell us what you would like us to do, who you would like us to feature, when you would like to see stuff, how you would like it presented, and why you would like to get involved! We welcome writers, illustrators and photographers, or simply those wanting to join in the conversation, comment, bring ideas or give suggestions. The floor is yours…

Our content is broken down into four categories: food and drink; entertainment and culture; shopping and lifestyle. So we’ll be featuring the finest York independent oddities in each, travelling from Skosh to Spark, from The Crescent to Botanic, plus a whole lot more, through our regular blogs, telling stories and offering information.
