Some may say that there is no better feeling than that of a new book. The smell of the new pages and the cracking of the spine are something of life’s little pleasures, all right before you get stuck in and lose yourself in a whole new world.
But, before you get to that stage – where do you go? The emporium of wonder that is a bookshop of course. And believe us – York has plenty of them. For all you book lovers and book worms, we’ve lined up some cosy independent bookshops for you to explore…
The Little Apple Bookshop
The Little Apple Bookshop is a little bookshop with a huge range of delights for you to choose from. Pay them a visit on High Petergate and see for yourself – we can’t promise you will leave empty handed!
If you’re wanting something really special, then look no further than Lucius Books, who are specialist dealers in rare and first edition copies. They have been trading in rare books since 1993 after initially selling crime fiction novels, and the business expanded ever since. They are the perfect place to visit to buy a special gift, or to treat yourself to something exquisite for your collection. See their wonders at their shop on Micklegate.
Janette Ray Bookshops
Janette Ray Bookshops is a family run bookshop which has been in business since 1996. Her shop, located in a beautiful medieval building on Bootham, is home to thousands of rare and out of print books. If you’re interested in the likes of architecture and building, landscape design, design history, international exhibitions, town planning, photography and fine art – this is the place for you. The majority of the books Janette has on sale are dated between 1800-1950, so you’re definitely going to be returning home with a gem!
The Minster Gate Bookshop
Their title speaks for itself, with this bookshop placed firmly near the gates of the Minster, in the very heart of York. The Minster Gate Bookshop sells amazing quality antique and second-hand books, ideal for those looking for something a little different. As well as antique books, they stock a variety of illustrated and children’s books. They also stock a variety of old maps and prints for you to take your pick from!
Fossgate Books is described as “a real find” – stocking a huge variety of books. Fossgate is regarded as one of York’s most loved areas, which is no surprise that their bookshop is the same. If you’re looking for a new book for yourself, step into the peaceful sanctuary that is Fossgate Books and get lost in a new read.
York is incredibly luckily to have so many thriving bookshops, especially in today’s apparent decline in the survival of the independent bookstores. With that being said, be sure to support your local bookshop where their specialist knowledge and expertise makes it not only an enjoyable experience, but you leave with a book which is exactly what you were looking for!
